A Few From the Frozen North

Island friend Molly McGreevy got this great shot from the air as she traveled back to the island from St. Ignace. It's Canada Steamship Lines' Frontenac passing under the bridge. The Frontenac has been hauling frieight in the Great Lakes for almost 50 years.

A Few From Lake Blackshear

Lake Blackshear friend Marianne Lashley shared that the Camellias are blooming at the lake. I bet our old yard is full of these pink and white blooms right now. I miss Camellias . . . and I miss Marianne!

Another Lake Blackshear friend, Samille Posey, has been posting a photograph of sunsets from her dock each day since Jan. 1. This one though was sunset from the other side of the ri'vah - the Booger Bottom dock! I miss Booger Bottom . . . and I miss Samille!

And A Few from Sunny Florida!

The final pieces of our family room furniture came - the coffee table - which is really a very old trunk from Indonesia (it took five months to get here) and two small ottomans that will give us extra seating when we need it!

A Story to Tell – the “Other” Lowell

All of you who are regular readers know Lowell Greene, one of my favorite people in the whole wide world and someone who loves the island almost as much as we do.  You’ve read about him, seen his comments and photos of him and his sweet Faye for many years now.

But . . . there is another Lowell in my life!

His name is Lowell H., and he’s been a Bree’s Mackinac Island Blog fan for almost as long as Lowell G. (except that Lowell H. does his commenting through email, not directly on the blog).  Lowell H. was born in Michigan and loves Mackinac. Although I feel as though I know him and his wife Amy almost as well as Lowell G. and Faye, you readers don’t know him at all.

Phone rings Friday morning, and it’s Lowell H.  He and Amy are traveling back to their home in North Carolina from Key West, and they’re staying the night in Palm Coast.  What are the chances we could get together?

Are you kidding me?!  I’ve been corresponding with this gentleman for over six years and have never laid eyes on him!

So, Saturday morning Ted, Blake and I meet them at their hotel for breakfast, and we spend almost two hours talking our heads off and just having the best time!  Thank you, thank you, Lowell and Amy, for calling and making this meeting happen – it was awesome!

Sunday love and hugs to you all!

God bless.

  1. Brenda how/where did you find the trunk coffee table and why did it take so long to get.?..because of where it was located? Anyway, I love it!! Florida looks nice, sunny and warm. I can’t wait to go kayaking again. It was so much fun the first time. This time we want to kayak to Round Island. 🙂

    • Hilde , it was the table my interior decorator said I HAD to have, but I had no idea it would take so long to get here and neither did she. It came by boat, and I think it must have sat in a few ports of call for weeks! I love it though. Lots of storage inside and it has wheels on the bottom so it’s easy to move around. After about 3 months of waiting, she asked if I just wanted to get something else, and I said heck no. I wanted to see this trunk!!

  2. Absolutely love the story about Lowell H! How delightful!

It seems like Bear & Maddie are enjoying their Florida life and have a nice Nature Preserve to take a stroll.

Your house is very stunning! Enjoy the “Florida dream”! LOL!

  3. Brenda,

Well, what a surprise! Another Lowell! It’s such a rare name. I’ve only known two other Lowells in my life, and one was my uncle, my mother’s brother. Yes, that’s where my mother got my name. The other one was a guy I worked with for a short time. He was the stereotype of a Redneck Hillbilly Blowhard. I was glad when he moved back to Dallas, Texas from Austin, where we were living at the time. ‘Nuff said about that, and I’ll just bet Lowell H. is nothing like that. Be sure to tell him I said, “Greetings from the depths of the Michigan snow. By the way, my second oldest sister’s name was Amy. I’ve always thought it was a beautiful name, and she was a very beautiful girl.

  4. Very nice blog this week Mrs. B. Why is it that every time I see something about Booger Bottom I scratch my nose…………I don’t get it! Really nice photos and stories.

  5. Strange question! Your beautiful Sunday picture – the first thing I noticed was the grass (or lack thereof!) Do you Floridians irrigate and seed the lawns? Thanks

    • Nicole – I think what you’re seeing in that large space is brown grass. It does get cold enough here that the grass goes dormant in the winter. Here in our subdivision our grass is sodded, and we do have an irrigation system. But it’s all brown right now.

  6. Your coffee table looks great. Enjoy it. The pics are great this week too. Do you think camellias would grow well in Northern Ohio? lol. Always love the pics of the island.
Really like these tours you take us on. I’m learning a lot about Florida, that I never knew.
Have a great week of adventure.
